A cooling comforter that keeps working after you warm up.

A lot of cooling comforters only feel cold when you first get in. ThermaCool also has a fill that soaks up extra body heat as you warm up. And it comes with a free cooling sheet set.

5 reasons our cooling comforter isn't like the rest

If you run hot, you know how it goes. The comforter feels nice and cool when you get into bed, and by 2 a.m. you've kicked it onto the floor. Here's what makes ThermaCool different, and what to check before you buy any cooling comforter.

Illustration of how the phase-change fill works: you get in and the cool-touch side feels cold; you warm up and the fill absorbs your heat; you cool down and it releases the heat back.

1. It keeps cooling after you warm up.

A cool-to-the-touch fabric feels great when you first slide into bed, but it soon warms up to your body temperature. ThermaCool's fill is 30% phase-change material, which soaks up extra heat as you warm up and lets it go again as you cool down. (It works a bit like an ice cube, which keeps soaking up heat while it melts.) So the cooling doesn't stop at the first touch.

Check any cooling comforter: does it say what keeps it cool once you've warmed it up, or only that it feels cool?

"I bought this because I sweat so much in my sleep and I was sick of waking up drenched in the middle of the night. This comforter has stopped that"

3 ways to cool: a cool-touch side that feels cold when you get in, a phase-change cooling fill that soaks up your body heat, and a TENCEL™ Lyocell side that pulls sweat away. Who has all 3: Dosaze has all three; Rest Evercool and Buffy Breeze have the cool-touch and TENCEL™ sides; Slumber Cloud has the cool-touch side and a phase-change fill; Cozy Earth lists none.

2. One side feels cool. The other stays soft and dry.

One side is a smooth fabric that feels cold the moment you touch it. The other side is TENCEL™ Lyocell, a soft, breathable fabric that pulls sweat away from your skin. Add the phase-change cooling fill in between and you get all three ways to cool. We looked at four other popular cooling comforters, and none of them lists more than two.

Check any cooling comforter: does it tell you what's inside, or just say "cooling fabric"?

3. Toss it in the washer and dryer.

Some cooling comforters are spot clean or dry clean only, which gets old fast on something you sleep under every night. ThermaCool goes in your washer and dryer at home. Use it on its own or inside a duvet cover; it has loops to hold one in place.

Before you buy: read the care tag. Some cooling comforters say dry clean only.

"The comforter is cool to the touch and yet still plush and luxurious feeling to it. Have washed it multiple times and still feels like new"

Side by side: a brand's word, “trust us, it cools,” next to the Dosaze ThermaCool Comforter, verified by an independent lab, with a TENCEL™ Lyocell side and a phase-change cooling fill.

4. You know exactly what's keeping you cool.

“Cooling” is printed on a lot of comforter packaging. What matters is what's doing the cooling. On ThermaCool, one side is TENCEL™ Lyocell, a soft, breathable fabric that pulls sweat away from your skin, and 30% of the fill is phase-change material, which soaks up your body heat as you warm up. Both are named right on the product page, so you know what you're paying for.

Check any cooling comforter: look for named materials, not just the word “cooling.”
