Cooling gel memory foam pillow: a buying guide

A cooling gel memory foam pillow is a memory foam pillow with gel added. The gel may be mixed into the foam as beads or swirls, poured as a layer on top, or built into a ventilated core. It draws heat away from your head, so the pillow feels cooler than plain memory foam. The gel does most of its work early in the night. After that, how cool the pillow stays depends mostly on airflow through the foam and on the cover fabric. When you compare pillows, check four things: where the gel sits, how air gets through, what the cover is made of, and whether the height suits the way you sleep.

What the gel does, and where it stops

Standard memory foam softens with body heat and then holds onto it. That slow, molding feel is why people buy it, and it is also why it can feel warm by 2 a.m. Gel moves heat better than foam does, so a gel layer or gel beads pull warmth away from your skin when you first lie down. That is the cool-to-the-touch feeling you notice in the first few minutes.

Gel can only absorb so much heat. Once it warms to about the temperature of your head, it stops pulling much more away. From then on the pillow feels close to body temperature unless air can move through it or you turn it over. The pillows that stay cooler pair gel with something else: shredded fill with gaps between the pieces, vent channels, or a cover that wicks moisture.

So expect a cooler pillow, not one that stays cold all night. And if you wake up with a damp neck most nights, the pillow is only part of the fix, because sheets, comforters and mattresses trap heat too.

The main types compared

Type How it's built Cooling Adjustable height? Suits
Gel-infused solid foam Gel beads or swirls mixed through one molded block Mild; the dense block limits airflow No Back sleepers who want an even, consistent surface
Gel-infused shredded foam Loose pieces of gel memory foam inside a zip cover Good; air moves between the pieces Yes, add or remove fill Combination sleepers, and anyone unsure of the loft they need
Gel layer on top A sheet of gel or gel foam bonded to one face Strong at first contact, usually on one side No People who run warm when falling asleep and don't mind flipping
Ventilated gel core (hybrid) A gel core with air channels, surrounded by a second foam or fill Good; designed for air movement Often Hot sleepers who still want firm neck support
Gel layer on a wedge A cooling gel layer over a sloped foam wedge Good on the sleeping surface No, fixed incline People who sleep with their upper body raised

What to check before you buy

Where the gel is

Gel only cools what it touches, or what sits close to it. "Gel-infused" can mean a modest amount spread through the foam. A gel layer puts more of it directly under your face. Look for the exact word in the product description (infused, layer, core, swirl), because each one cools differently.

Airflow

Shredded fill and vented cores let warm air escape as you shift during the night. A solid block, even one with gel in it, holds heat in much the same way solid memory foam does. If you have had a solid memory foam pillow before and found it warm, a gel-infused version of the same solid design may not feel very different after the first hour.

The cover

The cover sits between you and the gel, so it matters more than people expect. Fabrics sold as moisture-wicking, nanoporous or phase change material (PCM) are designed to move heat and sweat away from the skin. One catch: a thick flannel or jersey pillowcase pulled over the top cancels some of that. A thin cotton percale case works better on a cooling pillow.

Loft for your sleep position

  • Side sleepers usually need the tallest pillow, enough to fill the space between ear and shoulder.
  • Back sleepers do better with a medium height that keeps the chin from tipping toward the chest.
  • Stomach sleepers need a low, soft pillow, or an adjustable one with most of the fill taken out.

Get this right before you worry about cooling. A cold pillow at the wrong height still leaves you with a stiff neck. If you don't know your ideal loft, an adjustable pillow lets you work it out over a few nights.

Foam certification, smell and size

CertiPUR-US certification means the foam has been independently tested for certain chemicals and emissions, which is a useful baseline for anything you breathe next to for eight hours. New foam often has a faint smell out of the box that fades after a day or two of airing. Also check dimensions. A queen pillow (18 x 26 inches is common) needs a queen or king pillowcase, and a standard case will squash it.

Quick picks by situation

  • You switch positions during the night: shredded gel foam or a hybrid with adjustable fill, so you can settle on one height that works on your back and side.
  • You get hot mainly while falling asleep and then cool down: a gel layer gives the strongest first-contact chill.
  • You sleep raised because of reflux or snoring: a wedge with a gel layer, since a regular pillow can't keep your chest elevated.
  • You care more about firm, shaped support than temperature: a contoured memory foam pillow with a breathable cover may suit you better than any gel design.

Where Dosaze fits, and where it doesn't

Dosaze makes three pillows that use cooling gel. You can see them alongside the rest of the range in our pillows collection.

Dosaze Adjustable Pillow (Made in the USA)

This is the shredded type. The Dosaze Adjustable Pillow is filled with 100% cooling gel-infused memory foam with no polyester fill, and you can mold it and add or remove foam to change the height. Extra foam comes with every pillow, which helps side sleepers who want more loft. It is queen sized (18 x 26 inches), has a silky-soft hypoallergenic cover and is made in the USA. The usual shredded-fill trade-off applies: you will need to fluff it now and then, and it feels less uniform than a solid block.

Dosaze ThermaCool Adjustable Pillow

The ThermaCool Adjustable Pillow is our hybrid. It has a ventilated gel core designed to cycle hot air out while aligning your neck, plus an adjustable cooling fill so you can set the firmness. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified, and it is designed for side, back and stomach sleepers. If you run hot and the first-contact chill of gel alone hasn't been enough for you in the past, this is the one to look at first.

Dosaze Therapeutic Cooling Wedge Pillow

Only for people who want to sleep at an incline. The Therapeutic Cooling Wedge Pillow has a cooling gel layer and a nanoporous cover fabric that wicks heat and moisture away, over CertiPUR-US certified memory foam. Dosaze designed it to raise your upper body for issues like snoring and acid reflux, and you can also use it behind your back for lounging or under your legs. It replaces your flat pillow at night rather than adding cooling to it.

Where we are not the right fit

If you specifically want a solid, molded block of gel-infused foam, we don't make one. Our Contoured Orthopedic Pillow is premium memory foam with a naturally cooling, anti-microbial cover, but it has no gel. Choose it for the contoured neck support. Our travel pillows also skip gel. The Travel Neck Pillow uses a PCM cover and charcoal-infused foam instead. And if your whole bed runs hot, a gel pillow won't solve that on its own.

All of these come with a 60-night sleep trial, covered with shipping and returns on our FAQ page, which gives you time to find out whether shredded fill or a vented core suits you.

Small habits that help a cooling pillow

  • Use a thin, breathable pillowcase rather than flannel or a heavy knit.
  • Flip a gel-layer pillow when the top side feels warm. The underside has been away from your head and will feel cool again.
  • Fluff shredded pillows every few days so the air gaps don't pack down flat.
  • Air out a new foam pillow for a day before sleeping on it if the smell bothers you.
  • Avoid stacking a second pillow on top, which covers the gel and blocks airflow.

Frequently asked questions

Do cooling gel memory foam pillows stay cool all night?

Usually not completely. Gel feels coolest when you first lie down, then warms toward body temperature as it absorbs heat. Pillows that pair gel with shredded fill, vent channels or a wicking cover tend to stay cooler for longer than a solid gel-infused block.

Is gel memory foam better than regular memory foam?

For people who sleep warm, gel memory foam usually feels cooler, especially at first contact. The support and molding feel are similar to regular memory foam. If temperature doesn't bother you, regular memory foam in the right shape and height will support you just as well.

Can you wash a gel memory foam pillow?

The foam itself generally shouldn't go in a washing machine, because soaking and spinning can break it down. Most gel memory foam pillows, including Dosaze's, have a removable cover you can wash. For the foam, spot clean and let it air dry fully.

What is the best cooling gel pillow for side sleepers?

Side sleepers usually need a taller pillow, so an adjustable gel pillow is a good place to start, because you can add fill until your neck stays level with your spine. Shredded gel foam or a hybrid with a ventilated core also lets air move, which helps since your face presses into the pillow more on your side.
